Why we’re not at the Book Fair this year…

You may or may not have noticed that we won’t be at the Gothenburg book fair* this year.

CBK, TUSEN SERIER and WORMGOD decided collectively not to participate at the book fair after learning that Fria Tider** are once again welcomed by the organisers.
Some months have passed since this news came, and several voices have been raised against the book fair, but it doesn’t look like they have listened to the criticism.

We know what Fria Tider stand for. They have connections to national socialist organisations (the kind that actually calls/recently called themselves nazis) and they want to remove people like us.
Among us are immigrants, homosexuals, anarchists etc, and we have an international perspective in most of what we do. We do not accept the idea that Swedish culture would be superior to others or even big enough to be able to stand on its own. So when the Book fair open their doors to Fria Tider, we take it as a sign that we are not welcome.

Shutting someone out who wants to silence others would not be a crime against the freedom of speech, as some people claim. Rather, it’s self defense. The Book fair should be about culture and communication. So it wouldn’t be wrong to make it a free from those who want to reduce the cultural sphere to only include what they see as “Swedish” culture.

We hope that the Book fair in the future will take their part of the responsibility for preventing the fascist and nazi regimes of old to happen again. In the name of free speech.

*The annual book fair in Gothenburg is the biggest one and one of the biggest cultural events in Sweden.

**A web-based “news” site with strong ties to the Swedish nazi movement.

BLEED: Art exhibition by Tusen Serier

Opening: November 18, 17-22 @ Hybriden (Claesgatan 8, Malmö)

At Hybriden you will see artists draw blood and see their visual interpretations of the theme.

It will indeed be a red experience. We will overwhelm your senses! Not just by the artwork itself, but the music will be tailored for this night. The wine will be blessed and prepared. Amongst all of this we will have a blood fountain.

The exhibition is accompanied by CBA vol 35: BLEED that includes a wide array of comics on the same theme.

Participating artist in the exhibition are:

It’s all the time in the world. Odd moments are even. Time is money and everyone’s a billionaire. Spare some time? Here: free time for everyone! High quality time! No work and all play.

CBK organized the first AltCom back in 2004 as a one-time event, then it was turned into a full-scale comics festival and run by the Swedish Comics Association in 2010, 2012 and 2014. And now it’s back with us and Tusen Serier.

There will be exhibitions, films and a comics fair. During all of the festival, we will also give out the AltCom 2016: WORK anthology for free.

The book features an assortment of international artists, many of whom have been published in CBA over the years. Cover illustration by Kinga Dukaj.

Read more about it here.

And of course we will have a table and sell our books at the comics market on July 30-31 in Folkets Park.

On another note, CBA vol 35: BLEED has its submissions deadline on August 1, so if you have an amazing comic with lots of blood lying around, don’t hesitate to send it to us (see our submission guidelines for instructions).

Repeat Offenders

Release exhibition forrepeatoffenders
CBA vol 33:
REPEAT OFFENDERS
by Julia Scott

Opening: May 14, 17-20 @ Biograf Panora (Friisgatan 19,  Malmö)
The exhibition will remain until June 8.

REPEAT OFFENDERS
Everyone wants to feel connected to something bigger than themselves. When it comes to millennial ennui, however, things get complicated. Living the very American dichotomy of privilege and trouble, more often than not we gravitate towards anti-heroes and villains to break us out of our daily grind. But at what point do the troublemakers of American pop culture start resembling it’s youth more than the heroes? Diary essays paired with familiar faces create a dream landscape mirroring the millennial adolescent psyche.

CBA vol 33:REPEAT OFFENDERS is Julia Scott’s solo debut about growing up weird, growing up other, and taking courage from the seemingly innocuous cartoon villains that populated the childhood of a generation.

juliascottsmallJulia Scott is an American working artist based out of the very raucous Baltimore, Maryland. Some of her clients include Warner Bros, Archaia Entertainment, and Lion Forge Comics.  She draws the comic The Telepath Generation with writers Josh Tierney and Bobby Myers, and considers herself an animated pop culture connoisseur.

The exhibition is supported by Malmö Kulturstöd.
